Digital Politics

Well the media has been swamped in the UK by this year's general election. We have seen Cameron attempt to revive JFK, the UKIP tell us to sod the lot and a bunch of semi amusing gaffes so far. This year has been touted as the digital election, after the success of Obama's use of Social Media the UK political parties are desperate to learn from this and also use social media to reach out to the younger vote.

Anyway here are a few stats to show how Labour, Lib Dems, BNP and Conservative are doing.
Firstly Google search volume for the above 4 parties:

Now lets look at what words are associated with the parties via Twitter Stream Graphs (these results are Worldwide):

Robin Goad from Hitwise also has an interesting article looking at the number of people who are registering their vote online and how this has grown over time. The full article can be found at Htiwise's Intelligence blog.

Basically the key take outs are:

  • It appears digital is playing an important role in the elections this year
  • Younger voters are more likely to register their vote online and are making up a good chunk of the visitors to www.aboutmyvote.co.uk

Hans Rosling's lessons in data presentation

via ted.com

This video got sent around work the other week and really demonstrates the power of data when displayed in the right way. Although the data sets behind the animations are complex they are shown in a way that enables us to quickly and easily see correlations. A lesson for everyone that has to use data in presentations!
